Brief Summary of Book: Hooking Up (Shacking Up, #2) by Helena Hunting For those who want the best experience possible, Kristen recommends reading For You (from the ‘Burg series) before Jagged (of the Colorado Mountain) series. From there, she suggests the best order being the Dream Man series, followed by the Chaos/Unfinished Hero series and then The ‘Burg series. Because Kristen’s novels are connected, she recommends reading the Rock Chick series first, mixing the Colorado Mountain books in the mix, and Breathe before reading Rock Chick Revolution. In addition to her self-published titles, her Colorado Mountain, Dream Man and Chaos series are published by Grand Central Publishing. Our special, unique self-awareness means, he says, that we are not just another ape and he is surprised by how much he is required to defend this position, not just against the “ravings of anti-evolutionists” but against some of his colleagues who, he suggests, “revel in our lowliness” and regard it as a secular humanist’s version of Original Sin. He wants to discover what it is that “elevates the human being above the brute”. Vilayanur Ramachandran, Director of the Centre for the Brain at the University of California, San Diego, and a great populariser of neuroscience, adopts a quasi-religious starting point. This is a nascent area of investigation for neuroscience and both authors look to history, philosophy and psychology, and expand upon them with evolutionary biology. The Tell-Tale Brain: Unlocking The Mystery of Human Nature by VS Ramachandran (William Heinemann) Tired of being hunted by the vampires, slaves to the queen, I decide to fight back. One man there to save me, the other to claim me should the queen succeed in her quest for my blood.īut every time she nearly succeeds in my demise, my dark angel swoops in, pulling me back to safety. I was oblivious to the true roles of the two men in my life-the Angel of Light and the Angel of Death-as my existence hung in the balance. Then one day, my life is turned upside down by a prophecy naming me the one true queen. The queen always gets what she wants, and she wants me dead. In the new world, where the old world is long forgotten, an evil queen sits on the throne, and anyone who challenges her reign is a mortal enemy-I am that enemy just by breathing. I was sold “It was a murkier sort of solitude, silent with the wet sleep of the unformed world,” writes Lai. From the first lines I knew I would like it–lines on the first page about loneliness and primordial sludge made me pause with wonder. I was prepared to love the book, it had been recommended to me by a friend, and, as I said I’d already enjoyed another of Lai’s novels. Nu Wa & her story, generally in nineteenth century China, and her experience falling in love with the salt fish girl who works at the market and Miranda, who’s growing up in the technocapitalist Pacific Northwest from 2042 onwards, and who has the pungent smell of the durian fruit constantly emanating from her whole being and whose family is trying to find a cure. It floats out of time frames, bodies and characters but the main focal points are two protagonists. Published in 2002, the novel tells a dual or even quadruple story at once. Both novels in fact share certain preoccupations with gross bodily queerness as well as dystopian capitalist futures and clones. In other words it was really great, even better than The Tiger Flu (2018) in my opinion, which I read last year and enjoyed immensely too. Salt Fish Girl by Larissa Lai is a gooey treat of a book, full of nauseating smells, intoxicating feelings and so much juicy/murky/enticing fluid. In the course of researching the book I interviewed well over a hundred people and traveled from Los Angeles to Mississippi, from Georgia to New York, Alabama, Philadelphia, and Tennessee. I wanted to write a different kind of book this time, though, tending more toward narrative than toward profile, and while I recognized the impossibility of telling the whole story (Who can ever do that-who would ever want to do that? As Mark Twain once wrote, a real biography is impossible because "every day would make a whole book-365 books a year."), I wanted to present as convincing a portrait of a musical movement and a social milieu as could be deduced in retrospect. I started out more than four years ago with the idea of writing a book on Southern soul music in the '60s, a companion volume to my two earlier books, Feel Like Going Home and Lost Highway, and the last installment in a trilogy covering my three great musical loves-blues, rockabilly/country, and soul. IT IS THE story of a particular kind of music, but I hope it is more than that. She saw her mentor die and her worst enemy resurrected, and she refuses to bury another friend. The Stormwitch.
